Southdown/White Horse Walking Holidays holds Walkers Welcome and Cyclists Welcome
awards. We have been assessed by the Green Tourism Business Scheme and now hold
a Gold Award for our environmental efforts. There are thousands of businesses in
the British Isles working to reduce their carbon footprint through the Green Tourism
Business Scheme. Businesses are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold for their efforts
to be more sustainable. Our aim is to help promote sustainable tourism within the
region and we strive to show that participating in green tourism does not in any
way compromise our high standards.
Being walkers ourselves, we have an affinity with nature and consider ourselves very
lucky to live in such a beautiful location. We encourage guests to explore the local
countryside, researching walks to suit individual requirements. Many walks can be
taken right from the door or can be started or finished close to public transport
links.
Green Policy
We are committed to socially responsible and sustainable working practices by:
Using photo-voltaic panels for approximately one third of our power
Using short & low temperature washing/dishwashing cycles
Line drying bedding etc whenever possible
Using solar panels for water heating
Using eco friendly products
Growing fruit & vegetables
Purchasing local, free-range, organic and Fairtrade products
Promoting public transport & encouraging walkers and cyclists
Using low energy light bulbs
Using recycled paper products
Reducing waste, recycling & composting
Working with local organisations to promote the area
Marketing mainly through the internet
Offering long-stay discounts
Encouraging drivers to leave their cars here during their visit and to walk or use
the bus (especially popular with bus pass holders!)
Some things you can do to help save the planet
We are working to make our destination more eco-friendly, but we need your help.
We can all reduce our impact on the environment by making choices. As a visitor you
have a very important role to play in helping us to conserve our natural assets and
become a more sustainable destination. Here are some recommended tips on how you
can help:
Conserve Energy
Reduce energy by switching off lights and closing windows if heating is on.
Give the Car a Rest - bring your bus pass if you have one.
Leave the car behind, if only for a day. Walk, cycle or use public transport. We
will happily provide you with advice.
Shop Local
Use local products, they give you a flavour of the area and help support local communities.
We are fortunate to have some fantastic producers of food, drink and arts and crafts.
Ask us about local markets or local and regional produce.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Try to avoid overly packaged goods and say no to that extra carrier bag. We can recycle
your waste before you leave.
Be Water Wise
The UK has rising costs for water treatment and flood defence so please use water
wisely. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth and adhere to towel policies
or other water saving initiatives.
Respect Nature
Help us to look after the landscape and wildlife by not littering, guarding against
fire and using footpaths and cycle- ways responsibly. Ensure you follow the Countryside
Code.
