Neighbouring towns and villages also have a multitude of events planned. Visit Wiltshire has a comprehensive guide to them.
As a quality assessed establishment, we are visited annually by a Quality in Tourism inspector. Bi-annual overnight stays are incognito and bi-annual day visits are announced. Whilst these could be stressful occasions (and sometimes quite amusing as we play ‘spot the inspector’ as per Basil Fawlty) they always generate ideas and suggestions on how we can improve.
We usually take action on these suggestions. Last year we were marked down on our rather faded dining room floor, which we have now replaced. Another suggestion was that we provide small folding tables for the bedrooms. Each room now has a compact folding table which is the right height for the bedroom chairs.
The Wessex Ridgeway
2014 saw a surge of interest in The Wessex Ridgeway and we welcomed a number of walkers who were walking all or part of it. One was ‘Rambling Pete’ who has written a very interesting and informative blog about his experience. Southdown features on the first page. You can read it here. If you’d like to base yourself here for the Wiltshire section of the walk, call us to discuss your requirements.
We have had many walkers and cyclists here but far fewer horse riders. This year we had a couple of riders staying here whilst visiting The Pewsey Vale Riding Centre, which they rate very highly. The riding centre is less than 6 miles and 15 minutes drive from here in beautiful countryside. They cater for everyone and our guests had jumping lessons and afternoon hacks. If you choose our coffee room, you can often see local horses in the field opposite us.
We have just signed up with Instagram to post photos whilst out & about. Click the icon on the left if you’d like to sign up.

This year our inspector will stay overnight. We hope to retain our 4 star silver grading with the breakfast award.
